Pelican Bay ARC and Port Orford Hams cooperate to expand Curry County VHF coverage.

Three years ago, Don Kendall, Curry Co. Emergency Services Coordinator, asked Curry Amateurs to unite coastal Curry Co with VHF communications. Doug K7KY and Mindy W7ZAP revived the Curry Emergency Net on the 147.25 repeater at Bosley Butte. Although the Bosley repeater does reach both ends of coastal Curry Co, there are numerous shadows in north Curry Co that lack coverage.

At our annual picnic this year, PBARC President Paul Carlin KE6NVU, and POHams President Harry Bryant KC7HVM, agreed on a plan to explore possibilities for a low-level coastal repeater that would cover the northern shadows. One attempt has been made, but was not fruitful. Other possible locations are yet to be explored.

It’s refreshing to see the up-tick in cooperation between the regional Amateur Radio clubs. PBARC and DNARC have numerous dual-club members and there is a growing spirit of friendship and cooperation between the clubs. Now, we are working with our north-county colleagues in Port Orford to improve emergency communications in Curry County.
